North Korean leader Kim Jong-il dies
North Korean state television has announced that the country’s leader Kim Jong-il has passed away in Pyongyang. The head of the communist state was 69.
A tearful news presenter dressed in black said the “Dear Leader” had died on Saturday morning of fatigue and over-work. The news was announced on Monday.
Kim Jong-il had been battling ailing health in recent years. It is believed he suffered a stroke in 2008.
He had been ruling North Korea since the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994. It is believed that he was preparing his son, Kim Jong-un, to become his successor.
The South Korean military has announced an emergency alert and its National Security Council is convening for an emergency meeting following the news from the North, Yonhap news agency reports.
